Post-iodination trends in thyroid pathology; 14-year experience at a single center in a goitre endemic area

Introduction: Goitre is endemic in many parts of Sri Lanka. Universal iodination salt was commenced Lanka 1995 as a measure to reduce the prevalence. This study designed identify pattern thyroid pathology reported during period 14 years from 2002 2015 Pathology Unit serving population goitre area Lanka.Methods: descriptive cross-sectional included all thyroidectomy specimens histologically assessed at our unit 2015. Data on age, gender, clinical presentation, type resection, and histopathological diagnosis were retrieved records. The trend change over time analysed by comparing 2002-2010 cohort (615specimens) with 2011-2015 (995 specimens).Results: 1610 specimens. Features colloid present 71.6% (1152/1610). Prevalence chronic autoimmune thyroiditis cancer 41% (660/1610) 15.3% (246/1610) respectively. There no significant gender age presentation years. However, an upward prevalence both focal diffuse (p<0.001), hyperplastic nodules (p=0.008), papillary microcarcinoma carcinoma nodular (p=0.004) evident.Conclusions: Parallel increase together goiter evident.
